"The Bowker's of Scituate,Mass. and Maine are descended from a member of the Royal Court of King James I. His name was James Bowker. He was an accountant in Counting House; store-house of the King's Treasuries and the Crown Jewels. He was falsely accused of stealing a number of them and his reputa-tion and family name were ruined. In 1625,his two elder sons John and Edmund emigrated to America and settled in Scituate. His infant son James was taken to Sweden (hence the transla-tion to Buker) by a sister and a trusted family servant. He followed his older brothers to America years later."

He hired himself to (True)Love Brewster (of the Mayflower), son of Elder William Brewster, in 1638. For one year's service Bishop was to receive a small sum of money and 20 bushels of indian corn. (p. 103). On January 5, 1640-1 he was hired to dwell with Nathaniel Sowther for seven pounds per year. (Vol. II, Ibid. 1641-1651, p. 6). Sowther was secretary of the Plymouth colony for a number of years before he moved to Boston. The arrangements with both Brewster and Sowther indicate that Richard was hired to work for those men. Among those "Able to bear arms in the Colony of New Plymouth. 1643, were Nathl Souther, George Clarke, and Richard Bushop.". In a town meeting at Eastham, Massachusetts, May 22, 1655, all the settlers were divided by vote into groups of five, and each group of five men was to keep a bull. One such group included Richard Knowles, Joseph Rogers, George Crisp, Thomas Robert, and Richard Booshop. All of these probably lived near each other.
